In the district of port Melbourne, Victorian terrace houses are common housing architecture which some are still preserved for cultural and heritage reasons. Those two-floor buildings are now still keeping the facade design but many residents are updating the interior to make the home suitable for modern living.

Involved in one of notable projects in the area, Chan Architecture tried to bring up modern ambient in an old house by renewing the interior and rear part of the house.

Project Brief

In the most of single terraced house buildings in Australia were designed with double floor narrow size which still spare some decent outdoor space in the rear.

The clients wanted to transform the house internally and adding an extension for the new kitchen and living room. Moreover, the transformation of the rear space was very notable.

Large glass wall upper side of the facade was made of translucent glasses of different size and stain colors while the lower floor is entirely openable giving cantileved look of modern house design.

Classic Interior Touch

The interior part of the new extension was designed to cohere with the rear facade so the indoor and outdoor part is visually connected in creating modern aesthetic industrial home design.

An old warehouse concept is very strong as they show enhanced display of marine stained glass, exposed brick and steel beams.

Modern House Finish

While exposed old brick wall brings down the refreshing feeling, the designers decided to make the other interior parts in new modern atmosphere so that the house feels much breathable and enjoyable.

The new character is visually attractive applied in the kitchen area which designed openly without upper cabinet. The kitchen island is the centerpiece of the room as it also works as bridging element that make the brick surface work on modern kitchen.

Moreover, the old and classic elements of the brick and exposed steel beams is enhanced with hidden ceiling lite that can give brighter and artsy look on the brick surface.
